LA LA LAND BTS

La La Lands opening scene "Another day of Sun" sets the stage for one of the most awarded films of all time. But it came along with many challenges. The Head Choreographer, Mandy Moore had a huge roll of the orchestration of this shoot. Prior to the 3 day shoot, Mandy and her dancers practiced in weeks in a parking lot every move that would take place on camera (see below). Yes, this prep work did help but, more challenges met them during the shoot. The days of filming Another Day of Sun were some of the hottest days in California all year. This made all the dancers and especially band that springs out of a truck very hot all day long. Little things that made all the difference such as the music timing, making sure that the time it took the sound to travel to a dancer furthest away that they were not dancing off beat. They placed speakers under cars and in hidden places to make sure all the dancers were hearing the same music. Mandy Moore explains how she was directing her dancers with a loudspeaker, yelling at them when to come into the shot. Everything had to be timed perfectly such as the skateboard hitting the ground on beat. This arose even more challenges because skateboarders and dancers don't count off the same. Dancers count off in 8's while a skateboarder is used to hearing 3..2..1. So Mandy Moore had to do exactly that for those individuals  It was unexpected that this shoot would be a crane operated system. The director and his team had to make countless decisions such as if the camera should be horizontal with the horizon or with the slope of the ramp. Along with unfortunate dysfunctions during the shoot such as the big blue truck door, not opening was a small thing that the team had to deal with. Another Day of Sun really is a remarkable scene that has great behind the scenes stories. It really goes to show the value of preproduction and even after weeks or months of it, things can still go wrong but it is important to have a team that knows how to deal with these mishaps. I highly recommend the film La La Land, or even to just watch the first scene "Another day of Sun"
