The Color Purple is one of the great sorties in American literature written by Alice Walker in 1982. The novel won a Pulitzer Prize in 1983. And then the spectacular film directed by Steven Spielberg released in 1985. The film introduces Whoopi Goldberg as Celie, Danny Glover as Albert, and Oprah Winfrey as Sofia. The film took 15 Million to shoot and it raked in 142 million in the box offices. The film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards but did not win a single one. Many critics thought they were snubbed due to them thinking it was the film of the year. The overall look of the film is very colorful. But something that I really notice when I watch older movies is the lack of moving shots. In current films with new technology and the ability with drones and cranes, it is very easy to incorporate moving shots. Whereas with a film like The Color Purple almost all of the shots are static which has its positives and negatives. With static shots it leaves a lot of room that can be used with fantastic acting, which this film offers. Shots are usually quicker when they are static to keep the viewer visually interested. The color in this film is fantastic with wardrobe, sets, weather, etc. it all works really well together. The amazing sunsets with purple flowers to open the film is great. The editing and especially sound editing in the film I was really impressed by. In one of the final scenes when everyone is walking into the church the sound editing of the people singing in church and the people singing while walking was really well balanced especially with the shots changing. The Color Purple is a fantastic film that I would highly recommend to a viewer who is not only looking for great cinematography but also an amazing story. I truly enjoyed watching this film and I give it a 5/5 stars.
