MOONLIGHT

"MIDDLE OF THE WORLD"

This Scene in Moonlight, the winner of best picture in the 2017 Oscars, perfectly encapsulates the essence of the entire film. It shows Chiron a young black boy living in Miami finding himself and his sexuality through the rough life surrounding him. In this scene Chiron Is taught how to swim with a man from the neighbor hood who acts like a father figure, later to be found out that he is selling drugs to Chirons mother. This scene beautifully shows the relationship between character and uses the beauty of minimal sound mixed with luxurious visuals dipping in and out of the water. This film is directed by Barry Jenkins and Cinematography is done by James Laxton. This scene stands out from the rest due to is simplicity that leaves room for shots to be perfect and for the actors to really show. Moonlight is filmed on a ARRI Alexa Plus, which delivers beautiful images but the lighting and color grading really stands out in this film. we see this in the swimming scene with the skin tones, water, and sky all balanced and looking beautiful. James Laxton was shooting this handheld with a protective case over the camera and a wetsuit on. While in the water we do not see a ton of cuts, it feels very natural and the camera is used as If we were a person in the water as well. We see whip pans back and further between characters. This scene is mostly created with wide shots or medium shots. Most of the movie is done with wide and medium shots. Director Barry Jenkins and Cinematographer James Laxton specificly talked about the use of space in the film Moonlight and how they wanted to make it feel that even though the film is about the inner conflicts with Chiron, there is an abundance of space around the character which referenced how Chiron has been Just as effected by his surrounding. Only a few times in the film did it show close ups, and as a audience member I immeadetly picked up on it. Because it becomes very personal and intimate. The use of sound in this scene is also amazing, the use of absence of sound relates to the "in the middle of the world'' feeling and Chiron trying to find himself. This scene is the perfect snapshot of the emotional feel of the entire film. I highly recommend it for its Cinematography because it looks amazing. But the sound, lighting, acting is great as well. This is my favorite movie of all time, I think it is perfect and such an experience to watch.
